Things to See on the Uetliberg

Eleven places that turn a quick viewpoint into a full day — or several.

Most visitors ride up, look at the view and ride down. That is a fine hour — but the mountain has much more: a 150-year-old railway, a walk through a scale model of the solar system, a cable car, a forest full of trails, and one of Europe’s most pleasant cities directly below. Here is what to see, grouped by where it is.

The summit & the way up

Uto Kulm Summit

The top of Zurich at 871 metres

The summit plateau of the Uetliberg, a ten-minute walk above the railway station: viewing terraces over the city, the lake and the Alps, the car-free Hotel UTO KULM with its restaurant, and the lookout tower beside it.

Uetliberg Lookout Tower

A 360-degree view for a small fee

The triangular steel lookout tower next to Uto Kulm lifts you above the treetops for the full panorama — Zurich and its lake to the east, the Alps to the south, the Reppisch valley and the Jura to the west. Entry is through a turnstile for a small fee.

The Uetlibergbahn (S10)

From the main station to the mountain in about 25 minutes

The red S10 trains climb from Zürich main station through the suburbs and the forest to the Uetliberg station at 813 metres. The line opened in 1875 and is one of the steepest standard-gauge railways in Europe to run without a rack.

Hiking Routes up the Uetliberg

On foot from the tram to the top

Zurich locals walk up their mountain all year. Signposted paths climb through the forest from the tram stops at Triemli and Albisgütli — from the lantern-lit Laternenweg to the steep, direct Denzlerweg — in roughly an hour to an hour and a half.

Along the Albis ridge

The Planet Trail (Planetenweg)

A ridge walk through the solar system

The classic Uetliberg walk: an easy ridge path from the Uetliberg station to Felsenegg, lined with models of the Sun and planets at a scale of one to a billion. Allow about an hour and a half to two hours, with views on both sides.

Felsenegg & the Cable Car

The scenic way back down

At the far end of the Planet Trail, Felsenegg has a restaurant terrace above Lake Zurich and the small Adliswil–Felsenegg cable car (LAF), which drops to the Sihl valley in a few minutes for the S-Bahn back to the city.

Mountain Biking & Winter Sledging

Marked trails in summer, a sledge run when it snows

The Uetliberg is Zurich’s outdoor playground: dedicated mountain-bike trails such as the Antennentrail and Höcklertrail, a sledging run down to Triemli when there is enough snow, paragliders overhead and official barbecue spots in the woods.

Zurich & beyond

The twin towers of the Grossmünster rising above the Limmat riverfront in Zurich Zurich & beyond

Zurich Old Town

Lindenhof, Grossmünster and the lanes by the Limmat

The city you look down on from the summit: a compact Old Town on both banks of the Limmat with the twin-towered Grossmünster, the Fraumünster and its Chagall windows, the Lindenhof terrace and the shops of Bahnhofstrasse.

The white passenger boat MS Säntis on Lake Zurich under a clear blue sky Zurich & beyond

Lake Zurich, Lindt & the FIFA Museum

Boats, chocolate and football by the water

Zurich’s lakeside extras: scheduled lake cruises from Bürkliplatz, the Lindt Home of Chocolate in Kilchberg and the FIFA Museum in Enge — easy to add before or after the mountain, and good alternatives when the summit is in cloud.

A tour boat in front of the foaming Rhine Falls with the rock in midstream Zurich & beyond

Rhine Falls & Alpine Day Trips

From the local hill to the real giants

The peaks on the Uetliberg’s horizon are closer than they look. From Zurich you can reach the Rhine Falls in under an hour and Mount Rigi, Pilatus, Titlis or the Jungfraujoch on a day trip, by train or on a guided tour.

A perfect Uetliberg day: a morning walk through the Old Town; the S10 up after lunch; the summit and the tower; the Planet Trail along the ridge to Felsenegg; the cable car down to Adliswil and the S4 back to the city in time for dinner. All of it on one day pass.
Plan your day on the Uetliberg

Mountain in the morning, Zurich by afternoon

The summit is about 25 minutes by S10 train from Zürich main station. Pair the view with an Old Town walk, a lake cruise or a day trip to the Rhine Falls — compare and book in a couple of taps.
